Is it risky to drive during pregnancy?

Edited by: at 10/10/2023

Many women wonder if they can handle while they are pregnant, or if this involves a risk.

Dr. Jesús Rafael Borchardt López

Experts say there is no rule about whether or not to drive during pregnancy. However, the most important thing when driving during pregnancy is the position adopted for that and the position in which the steering wheel is located; above all, this consideration must be taken into account at the end of gestation. Occasionally, they are asked not to drive after 36 weeks of gestation due to the size of the belly.

Recommendations for pregnant women are:

  • If you find it uncomfortable to drive, do not do it and ask for help
  • Always wear a seat belt (it has been shown to reduce the number of fetal deaths in motor vehicle crashes)
  • Sit as straight as possible, with the safety belt under the belly, that is, on the pelvis. The cross-section of the belt should go to the chest and be located between the breasts
  • Adjust the seat approximately 30 centimeters from the steering wheel, in order not to activate the air bags
  • Do not drive if there is risk of premature delivery or multiple pregnancies

Remember that driving while pregnant is not contraindicated, but whether to pay more attention than usual, forgetting distractors, such as cell phones, messages. Pregnancy can decrease your reflexes, so keep your eyes on the road.
