Endometriosis in women of reproductive age

Endometriosis is a disease in which the tissue is found inside the matrix (endometrium).

Dr. José María Mojarra Estrada

This disease causes the endometrium to go off month by month (menstruation) and implant within the pelvis. This problem affects between 2 and 5% of the population, being more frequent in women suffering from infertility. In addition, it affects those with chronic pelvic pain. The main symptoms are:

  • Discomfort in menstruation (begin during adolescence), such as pains in the pelvis and irregularities in the cycle
  • Side pains
  • Infertility

The treatment of endometriosis is decided depending on each patient. It may be through medications that suppress ovarian function, oral hormonal contraceptives, and / or surgery. Surgery is the most affective treatment to eradicate this problem and even achieve fertility (through ovulation, uterine inseminations or in vitro fertilization).

The disease can recur in approximately 20% of cases and is estimated to occur 2 years after treatment.

Can it be prevented?

This disease can be prevented by attending early and timely with a Gynecologist when experiencing severe pain during menstruation or in a sexual relationship. Also, aerobic exercise decreases the development of endometriosis
