There are more than 300 million alveoli and together is what is known as parenchyma or pulmonary tissue proper and is the site where the exchange of gases in the lungs occurs.

Among other documented causes to develop various lung diseases and among them COPD are contact with powders and chemicals, as well as the contamination inside the walls of combustible material used for cooking (firewood) and heating in the house poorly ventilated. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are 400,000 annual deaths per exposure from biomaterials as frequent contact with wood smoke.

In COPD, the bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. There are more than 300 million alveoli and together is what is known as parenchyma or pulmonary tissue proper and is the site where the exchange of gases in the lungs, ie the transfer of oxygen from the alveoli to the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood to the alveoli.

Cough as the main risk factor

In contrast, both bronchi and bronchioles act as the tubing that conducts oxygen to the alveoli. The most common symptoms of COPD are related to the parts of the respiratory system that are affected. For example, when bronchial tubes are primarily affected, cough is often the main symptom and the disease is called chronic bronchitis. Usually people tell you "smoker's cough". In contrast, when bronchioles are primarily affected, the disease is known as the "small airway disease". And when the alveoli are affected (the walls are destroyed) the disease is known as "pulmonary emphysema" and the symptom prevalent in both pulmonary emphysema and in small airway disease is dyspnea.
