One of the main causes of chronic constipation in children is voluntary retention for fear of pain that causes the evacuation, since it is considered an unpleasant and painful experience.

This is why a vicious circle characterized by stool retention. This means that the child not to defecate will cause an even more painful experience when doing so.

General characteristics of constipation

Constipation is a defecation disorder characterized by difficulty in evacuating and the presence of hard stools that causes symptoms that are bothersome to the sufferer.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

The main symptoms of constipation are decreased frequency of bowel movements (2 or less per week), hard stools, painful and large stools; and specifically in children is, as mentioned above, voluntary retention, as well as fear of defecating in toilet or incontinence (frequent spotting of underwear).

The diagnosis is made with the symptoms and a clinical review. In rare cases studies are required to corroborate whether it is indeed constipation, or to rule out other diseases.
