One senses that suffers more with the passage of time is the view. From age 50, and further from the 65, our eyes are more susceptible to a degenerative disease the center of the retina called DMAE ( Macular Degeneration Age ). There are many subtypes, but basically there are two major forms of AMD: the wet and dry or exudative or atrophic. In the majority of cases of severe vision loss is due to the wet form, in which bleeding and stroke occur within the layers of the retina at the macula, that is, in the center of the visual field. However, in advanced stages, both produce blindness in the center of the vision, the more necessary for everyday life. This is precisely necessary to read the vision, identify a face, driving, etc.

Detection and Treatment

Thanks to research carried out in many centers over the last 20 years, we have achieved some molecules that intraocular injected, allowed to change the forecast that had the unfortunate wet forms of the disease so far. However, there is still much debate about what is the best treatment regimen for administration.

In our center we have spent many years researching all these drugs and the best way to manage through individualized guidelines for maximum visual improvement. Our mission is not only to ensure that patients gain vision or at least not lose, but it can be maintained over time. The atrophic form of the DMAE, however, remains without treatment. At this time, along with the degenerative diseases of the retina, is our unfinished business and our biggest challenge. At the Institute of Retina Macula i we are dedicated to the investigation of these diseases since years and we have achieved in our country to try new drugs in Phase I clinical trials. Currently, we are developing different lines of research to reach as soon as possible to have any effective treatment.
