The lactose is present in milk and its derivatives. The lactose intolerance is due to the walls of the intestine there is a decrease in the Enzyme needed for metabolization and absorption. This enzyme is known as lactase.

The frequency of lactose intolerance is detected differently in different countries. The areas more accustomed to consuming milk have fewer cases of lactose intolerance. In Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon is about 5% in the Spanish of 15-30%, and inhabitants of Central Africa China and up to 80 %.

Lactose intolerance may be permanent ( congenital ) or temporary (acquired). The permanent shape is determined genetically and is maintained throughout life, although it may suffer fluctuations. The ( reversible) temporarily occurs in relation to certain diseases, such as infectious gastroenteritis or intestinal inflammation other, also after taking certain medications ( anti-inflammatory, aspirin, antibiotics, etc. ).

Symptoms that appear after eating dairy in patients with lactose intolerance are varied but the most common are the abdominal bloating, pain and diarrhea. Its severity depends on the amount of lactose ingested, the level of lactase deficiency and susceptibility of each person.

The most effective and easy to diagnose lactose malabsorption test is breath test . Is to obtain samples of expired air ( blowing ) following administration of a known amount of lactose. There are also other methods of detection such as the blood test ( glucose level is measured in the blood), the genetic test ( DNA extracted from the patient is intolerant to check whether or not) and a biopsy of the small intestine ( determines if there is lactose in the intestinal mucosa ).

The treatment is to avoid lactose in the diet and, in certain situations, to use supplements of the enzyme ( lactase ) when dairy products are consumed.
