Laparotomy is surgery to operate any type of abdominal or emergency disease.

Dra.. Sofia Valanci Aroesty

Exploratory laparotomy is recommended for bowel resections due to cancer or diverticula, as well as surgery of liver, pancreas and spleen, also performed in cases of urgency such as trauma, either by accidents or injuries by firearm or white weapon. In this surgery an incision is made on the abdomen, depending on the underlying disease is the type of incision that is used. The average length of surgery ranges from 2 hours to 8 hours or more, depending on the complexity of the case.

Before undergoing a laparotomy in elective cases the patient should be fasting, without taking aspirin for 7 days or any other dietary supplement, if you take medication you should let your doctor know.

After surgery, you should walk as soon as possible in the hospital as soon as your doctor gives you permission to help early bowel movement and avoid complications. It is very important that for 6 weeks do not perform exercises such as: crunches, lifting weights, or load things greater than 5 kilos at home, since this time is where you have a higher risk of developing hernias. It is not necessary to be fused, but if it feels safer it is not contraindicated.
