All people, at some point in life, we will develop cataracts. It is an inevitable process of the passage of time. However, there are risk factors can accelerate their appearance such as smoking or diabetes.

Cataracts are the opacity of an inner lens of the eye called a crystalline lens. This opacity in the lens causes the patient to have blurred vision. It happens eventually in all people, it is a normal process of the passage of time. However, there are risk factors can accelerate their appearance such as smoking or diabetes. Other causes include a history of intraocular surgery, ocular trauma, and local or systemic exposure to steroids.

The diagnosis and treatment must be performed by a ólogo ophthalmologist. Once the cataract develops it is necessary to perform a surgical procedure with the objective of replacing the opaque lens with a prosthetic lens. This prosthesis is better known as an intraocular lens.

High technology treatment

Previously it was necessary to open the whole eye to extract the cataract completely, later a rigid lens was inserted and at the end multiple sutures were placed to close the wound. This is no longer the case. Today, through microincisions (1 or 2 millimeters), it is possible to spray and extract the cataract into the eye with the use of LASER and ultrasound. Once the eye is clear or clear of the cataract , a collapsible intraocular lens is inserted through the microincision with a special cartridge. The lens is folded to be inserted, and once inside the eye, it unfolds. There are ocular and multifocal intraocular lenses, which allow distant and near focus, so now we can also treat astigmatism and tired eyes to patients who will be operated on for cataract.

This surgery has revolutionized the visual result because the discomfort is minor and allows an early and very effective rehabilitation in the patients.
