Meniscal injury, ruptured knee cushions

The most common diseases, or common problems seen in the menisci are breaks. There are several ways you can break, can be degenerative, radial and horizontal injury.

Dr. Jesus Manuel Salazar Edgar Chavira

The menisci are an anatomical part that is inside of the knee, is basically a cushion which is between two bones between the distal femur and proximal tibia, it is formed by two small rings, one is in part half and one on the side, these are composed of hyaline fibrocartilage that serves as a cushion. The role of the menisci is to cushion between a bone and the other works about 50% buffer when it is in extension, and between 80 and 90% when the knee is flexed or under some stress, as it is up or down stairs.

Treatment for meniscal injuries

Treatment of the menisci is basically remove the area that is injured, usually treated to remove the least part of the menisci and, based on this, there is a rehabilitation of the patient to try to improve the biomechanics absence of the meniscus.

In many situations it happens that the meniscus of the medial part is basically integral, but on the side is removed virtually all, this is something you would not normally want to see and that is currently done in patients where what you see is the surface joint of the upper portion, the articular surface of the lower portion (this is the femur and tibia) and a total absence of the meniscus. In such a case the first thing you do is study and see how much actually measures the area where the meniscus is absent and try to get a meniscus; meniscal grafts are achieved in bone banks are cadaveric grafts are. Currently, or at least in Mexico, there are no synthetic menisci after this arthroscopic surgery is done and the meniscus, which in this case is a lateral meniscus, which is attached to the back portion with a anchors ranging from introduced inside out and then the lateral portion with sutures that go from the outside in. These are rare cases, fortunately not removed entirely menisci thanks to new technology that is counted, which is arthroscopy, but when removed more than 50% of the meniscus, it is advisable to do this type of transplant .

Ruptures, meniscal lesions affecting

The most common diseases, or common problems seen in the menisci are breaks. There are several ways you can break, it can be a degenerative lesion, there may be radial injury or horizontal lesions, which basically are in posttraumatic problems, such as athletes, occasionally in patients who have some overweight there is an overload and as the main function of the meniscus is to cushion suffers from increased pressure when it is flexed, then, when the knee flexion and no rotational motion, or twist, is when pressed between both bone and can break. Another major causes of meniscal injuries is overuse in patients who are chubby and elderly patients is due to dehydration of the meniscus, or because it is a damaged meniscus and tends to break.

Symptoms of meniscal tear

The main symptom of a meniscus tear is pain, may cause degenerative changes. The main reason that patients come to the clinic is discomfort in the meniscus, which can cause joint block where the knee is semi extended and, at the time the meniscus moves from one place to another, they feel some kind snapping. When the menisci are not treated properly or not come in time with the doctor, besides the meniscus is deteriorating increasingly begins to erode and cartilage hurt both the top and the bottom.
