Nodules in the thyroid gland or thyroid nodules are an abnormal growth that occurs in the thyroid gland.

Nodules in the thyroid are a neoplasm or tumors that can be benign or malignant. Both grow inside the thyroid gland. The frequency of these ranges from 10 to 15%. Most patients who have nodules in the thyroid do not know it.

To date the causes of the appearance of thyroid nodules are unknown, but one of the most frequent is of genetic or hereditary type. Something interesting is that it occurs mostly in geographic areas where there is an iodine deficiency.

The thyroid nodules are very silent because many of them can not be touched or seen, so timely diagnosis is very important. To do this, you must follow the appropriate steps and establish if a nodule is benign or malignant, or you have to do some other additional procedure. The first thing that is recommended is a medical checkup to examine if there is any particular risk factor and then it is necessary to take a blood test to see how the thyroid gland works.

Diagnostic Methods

Then, an ultrasound is performed to determine the characteristics of the nodule: size, shape, whether or not it has blood vessels, whether it has calcium in it or not. In general, ultrasound provides an overview of which nodules need to be evaluated in depth. Sometimes a biopsy is necessary, this can be done in the office, ideally guided by ultrasound. Biopsy is a relatively simple and non-invasive procedure in which thyroid nodule cells are sampled for examination and more accurately determined if a nodule has a risk of being malignant. In some patients it is also recommended to make a gamma or nuclear medicine study, although only in highly selected patients who are suffering from hyperthyroidism. There are other more extensive studies that can be done as tomographies and resonances, however, the cornerstone of the diagnosis is the clinical review and the ultrasound.
