Recently occurred in Barcelona off the third edition of the Barcelona World Race, the only race in which two crew members aboard a sailboat go around the world nonstop. This has made me think about possible skin problems that can undergo these patterns in the competition, and sailors have their craft at sea (fishing) or those making related to the sea (surfing, kite-surfing, sport etc. .).

The navigator due to environmental conditions to which it is exposed (sun, air, water, cold) may suffer various skin problems which I will discuss below. In a boat is quite exposed to sunlight, ultraviolet radiation can cause acute phase burns solar or allergic reactions (polymorphic light eruption). More chronic form, this cumulative sun exposure leads to a premature aging of the skin, with the emergence of more pronounced wrinkles, discoloration of the skin and brownish skin spots (lentigines) and appearance of dilations in the capillaries the skin (telangiectasia or venous lakes). The most serious problems that can occur, is the appearance of skin tumors, the most common of all basal cell carcinoma and less frequently but with more serious squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. It is basic using an appropriate photoresist.

Because of the cold, frostbite can occur, which are painful erythematous-bluish and cold, especially inflammatory lesions will be affected hands, feet, nose and ears. When in contact with water and moisture conditions may also be more susceptible to acquire both viral infections, with the appearance of common warts predominantly in the hands and feet, as fungal as candidal intertrigos especially in English and armpits and the characteristic " athlete's foot "which is a fungal infection of the interdigital folds feet. Finally, the presence of wind when browsing can cause dryness and scaling of both the face and lips is therefore very important to properly moisturize those areas.
