Diabetic foot disease is a complication of diabetes mellitus.

Dr. Alonso Pérez Nájera

Diabetic foot is the main risk factor for amputation of a leg, since it is considered as a type of injury that causes the loss of the continuity of the skin. There are complications that cause injuries, such as loss of sensation, some trauma (stroke), infectious agents and peripheral vascular disease. Risk factors for this pathology include advanced age, male gender, low socioeconomic status, depressed and lonely people, and poorly controlled blood glucose levels.

This disease encompasses different signs and symptoms that directly affect the health of the patient, the main ones are:

  • Decreased or lost sensation of part or entire foot
  • Skin thinning
  • Hair loss
  • Lack of sweating
  • Pain in calves and thighs when walking
  • Appearance of calluses on the sole of the foot
  • Glossy skin

If you notice any of the above symptoms, it is important to go to a specialist in Angiology and Vascular Surgery who will review the neurological, vascular and mechanical components of the feet (a recommended study once a year). Remember that early detection and timely treatment will be the key to avoid complications, since the diabetic foot has no cure because it is a complication of diabetes .

The main treatment recommended is to have good hygiene and make use of suitable footwear. Blood glucose control, antibiotics, relieving pressure sites, improving vascular flow, drainage, washing, and removal of infected tissue are also needed.
