Part 2: Diagnosis

The cornerstone of the diagnosis of renal stones or stones in the kidneys is the clinical suspicion that every doctor makes before the symptoms of pain, hematuria. However, there are studies prescribed by the urologist , which can confirm the condition. Approximately 80% of kidney stones are visible on a simple abdominal radiograph (calcium).

  • Ultrasound.- This is a non-invasive study that is easy to perform and does not bother even when the patient refers to colic type pain. Being an orientation study.
  • Excretory urography.- Excretory urography (also called intravenous pyelography) is the accepted standard test for the assessment of obstruction and renal function in patients suspected of urethral colic. It is able to show where the stone is, the size and the state of obstruction that exists.
  • Computed Axial Tomography Helicoidal.- This is a more accurate test for the diagnosis of urolithiasis.

Urinary stones (lithos) are different in their chemical composition:

Calcium oxalate: 70 to 80%Calcium phosphate: 5 to 10%Uric Acid: 5 to 10%Struvite: 5 to 10%Cystine: 1 to 5%
