Ovarian cysts and their relationship to infertility
Pregnancy is achieved in up to 75% of women who have a comprehensive treatment, which includes medications that induce ovulation.
Dr. Gerardo de Jesús Reyes Diaz
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the ovarian alteration that alters metabolic and Hormonally to women of active reproductive age, ie between 16 and 35 years of age. They are called polycystic ovaries , since in the periods of anovulation (cycles where oocytes are not produced), follicles that give appearance of cysts accumulate.
The main effects of PCOS occur in three areas: the menstrual cycle, fertility , and hormones, the latter related to poor insulin production, which can lead to diabetes. Also, obesity is a detonating factor for women to suffer from anovulation. Currently, anovulation is the leading cause of female infertility, present in 85% of women with PCOS.
Diagnosis and Treatment for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
The diagnosis is made through an examination of the gynecological history, physical examination, ultrasound to see the polycystic aspect of the ovaries, and hormonal studies. It is important to mention that a wrong diagnosis delays the treatment and reduces the chances of pregnancy. While the alterations that prevent ovulation are reversed, a comprehensive regimen is implemented that includes a balanced diet, constant exercise and medications to improve insulin sensitivity. The success of this treatment is 75% and the results are mostly favorable in women under 35 years.
There are patients who can not undergo this treatment, since they are intolerant to metmorphine (antidiabetic drug).
Importance of going to a specialist
The specialist in addition to helping to achieve pregnancy, will also improve the overall health of women and reduce risks of diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure, among other diseases.
